Cigarette Dreams

Cloudy thoughts that deprive the mind from feeling free to anticipate joy,

The aroma burns and penetrates more than just your clothes,

You inhale worry without knowing it enhances the stress you already conceal,

Your racing heart caresses the blood in your body away from the poison you love to feel,

I’m sure if given a choice it would not have chosen this,

The buds on the sidewalk tell stories only the pavement knows,

But if they could speak, they would be grey I’m sure,

These are cigarette dreams coated in tar,

Lingering in the air,

Invading your space,

Lathering away all the good you already have,

Wake up,

It’s only a dream…
